The 2017 Syrah is 35% whole bunch fruit, fermented in concrete and matured for 16 months in 60% new oak. It has a seductive, beautifully defined bouquet, the pure dark cherry, boysenberry and pressed violet aromas wafting from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, astutely judged acidity and lovely cohesion. There is real elegance in this Syrah, and a classic finish. You might well mistake it for the Northern Rhône (Cornas?) if served blind. Superb. ... More details

Pure fruit flavors of boysenberry and damson plum are ripe and focused in this suave, full-bodied red, enmeshed with a detailed range of iron, lavender, sage and dried orange peel notes. Fresh and sleek, a rich, harmonious version, with a streak of tangy iron emerging on the grippy finish. Drink now through 2032. 100 cases imported.

Dark, rich red and black fruits with a core of floral black pepper compound each other and create a synergy with the 2017 Swartland Syrah. The spice aromas are well-integrated on the nose. The palate is tightly structured and focused with the precision of high-quality Syrah. The finish is focused and has an assertiveness that is clearly Syrah. With precision of balance, the medium to full-bodied wine lingers on the long finish, which has a tight tannic grip that will last for years to come. 27,000 bottles were produced from a natural and spontaneous fermentation, with 35% whole cluster.

Varietal: Syrah

There continues to be much debate surrounding the name of the Shiraz/Syrah grape varietal, with many experts still quite unsure which came first. Indeed, even the origins of this varietal are more or less unknown, despite it being most commonly associated with the Rhone Valley of France, and New World countries, most notably Australia. However, its popularity and unique characteristics have seen it planted all over the world, where it continues to impress with its powerful flavors and wonderfully spicy notes of pepper and clove. Shiraz/Syrah wines are renowned also for their versatility, and are regularly used in single variety still and sparkling wines, as well as blended and oak aged wines which demonstrate its ability to express its terroir and secondary flavors very well.

Region: Coastal Region

South Africa is a fascinating country for wine, and the coastal regions at the very tip of the African continent are widely regarded as being one of the finest wine regions in the world. It isn't difficult to understand why the early European settlers in the 17th century saw such potential for viticulture in the area; the heat is fantastic, the summer days wonderfully long, the soil rich in minerals, and the strong winds coming from the ocean provide much needed coolness in which the grapes could ripen slowly and fully. Over time, South Africa's coastal regions became covered in strong, healthy vineyards, and today, the wine industry of the region is booming. The past few decades have seen wineries experimenting with a wide range of grape varietals, and also producing fortified wines and sparkling wines of great character alongside their classic varieties.

Country: South Africa

Situated on the very tip of the African continent, South Africa has proved itself over three centuries to be an ideal location for producing a wide range of wines. Benefiting from something not dissimilar to a Mediterranean climate, with long, hot summers complemented by both Atlantic and Indian Ocean winds, the grapes which grow on the valleys, mountainsides and plains of this fascinating country can ripen to their fullest capacity, producing wines packed full of fruity flavors and an array of interesting and enticing aromas. As a former colony, South Africa has long since been home to a range of different nationalities, who each brought something of their wine culture with them. As such, many European grape varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling and others have been given time to flourish in South Africa, allowing the country to develop a diverse group of wine types which are proving increasingly popular around the world.
