The lovely 2022 Suchots from Domaine de l'Arlot is complex and nuanced, with a sweet, silky curranty fruit and plenty of depth from mint, black tea, and earth notes. The texture is fresh and lively, with good acidity and firm tannins. The grapes come from a 0.85-hectare parcel in the upper portion of the vineyard; they are destemmed and gently fermented on native yeasts before ageing in cask (40% new). This wine will benefit from a couple of years in the bottle before opening. ... More details

93-95 The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru, matured in 40% new oak, is intense on the nose, opulent yet controlled with mainly red berry fruit, allspice and rose petal scents, just a hint of black olive emerging with time. Very well-defined. The medium-bodied palate comes armed with a voluptuous entry, almost viscous in texture, intense yet delineated with a gradual build to its sweet and detailed finish. This will require four to five years to open for business, but it is certainly a "serious" Les Suchots with a wonderful spicy edge.

An extremely elegant Vosne-Romanee 1er cru with the finesse and gracefulness we expect from this appellation. I love the floral delicacy and the summer-morning freshness of this beauty. I love the way the texture transforms from silkiness to velvet as the wine flows over your palate. And there’s a wonderful tension in the finish that makes it linger very long. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
Winery
Finesse, richness, complexity and harmony all come together and unite to show how complete this exceptional wine is. An iron hand in a velvet glove, it describes the fullness of the Pinot Noir with exceptional distinction, expressing a taut nervosity before resonating with richness and elegance. Its aromas evolve harmoniously with age. When young, the wine offers floral notes mingled with raspberry, morello cherries and blackcurrant. With time the aromas evolve and develop towards spices, liquorice, undergrowth and leather.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Whilst the Pinot Noir grape varietal has its origins in France, and is most closely associated with fine Burgundy wines, it is now grown in almost every wine producing country in the world. There are many reasons for this – the densely packed, deep black bunches of fruits are responsible for making a wide variety of excellent wines, generally agreed to be amongst the most drinkable and accessible one can find. With flavors ranging from currants and red and black berries, to more earthy, spicy notes, Pinot Noir is a versatile varietal which is revered for its relatively light body and beautifully vivid red color However, the grapes themselves are notoriously susceptible to various diseases, and struggle in fluctuating climates. This has not stopped wineries planting and cultivating these vines, though, as Pinot Noir, when grown carefully and treated properly, is a grape with a wide and increasing fan-base, and more often than not produces wonderful wines.

Region: Burgundy

In the beautiful French wine region of Burgundy, there is archaeological evidence to suggest that there has been viticultural activity going on for at least two thousand years. To add to this, there are early written records praising the exceptional wines produced in this region dating back to the 6th century, making Burgundy one of the oldest established and still operational wine regions in the world. The region is most commonly associated with fine red wines, with Pinot Noir being the primary grape varietal grown on its rolling hillsides and gently sloping valleys. However, Chardonnay grapes are also produced in abundance for the production of their fine white wines, with both varietals benefiting greatly from the region's warm, hot summers and the superb soils which make up the terroir.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.
