Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Faiveley's 2014 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very perfumed bouquet with pure dark plum, bergamot and pressed rose petal aromas that filter from the glass. Wonderful. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity, tensile from the start with hints of bay leaf and spice toward the structured and persistent finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Faiveley's 2014 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very perfumed bouquet with pure dark plum, bergamot and pressed rose petal aromas that filter from the glass. Wonderful. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity, tensile from the start with hints of bay leaf and spice toward the structured and persistent finish. This is a very strong showing from Faiveley, a really marvelous Mazis-Chambertin for the long-haul. Tasted September 2017.

93-96 A more expressive if less elegant nose features much more sauvage character on the dark berry fruit, humus, underbrush and smoked meat scents. The rich, full-bodied and distinctly powerful broad-shouldered flavors possess evident muscularity along with ample minerality that really comes to the fore on the gorgeously complex, intense and explosively persistent finale. This is a very serious wine and a classic Mazis and I emphatically underscore that this is going to need a very long time in a cool cellar to arrive at its peak.

This wine is concentrated and dense. Big tannins flow up through this wine, giving shape to the ripe black fruit. In the back, acidity dominates bright red berries and the potential for a rich, generous future. The wine will age over many years. Drink from 2022. (Cellar Selection)

Faiveley now works five parcels in Mazis, all in Mazis-Haut which is considered the best location - according to Erwan Faiveley, ‘the most “Gevrey" of the grands crus; a truly earthy wine.' Here the thin soils and slightly higher elevation on the slope combine to produce a structured, tannic wine. The iron in the soils seems to have contributed, at least in 2014, to a savoury, earthy note, a slightly exotic nose, and a fleshy texture that should develop in time into something unique.

Bright, full red. Musky, complex aromas of raspberry, dried flowers, crushed rock, black pepper, game, dark chocolate and earth. Shows much more definition and inner-mouth lift than the Charmes, with the peppery quality and firm underlying minerality energizing the middle palate. Savory, concentrated, layered and deep, with terrific berry intensity and a hint of cocoa powder. Taut and classically dry but not particularly austere. Finishes with serious, fine-grained tannins and terrific rising length. This very tight wine will need extended cellaring to soften and expand.

This wine reveals a deep ruby red hue and intense notes of oak, spice and red fruits on the nose. The palate offers the same aromas and the nose with a harmonious combination of fruity and oaky notes. With its smooth tannins and long, lingering finish, this well-balanced wine is the epitome of elegance. Serve with: Steak in a mushroom sauce, game stew, glazed duck breast, roast saddle of lamb.
