Lifted, spicy, quite intense aromas that suggest a wine that will be ready to drink young, showing black fruits, little balsamic notes and a resinous tang. Medium-bodied, this has some volume on the palate and it's shot through with pliable, ripe tannin. Not a massive wine, but an approachable one with a good sense of typicity and an enjoyable, tight and slender aspect to the palate. From 80-year-old vines grown on granite, fermented in concrete, matured in old barriques. Usually a good value pick.

Shows great focus and freshness, with a gorgeous stream of blackberry, blueberry and violet supported by a bed of ultrafine tannins and chalky minerals. Offers olive tapenade and wood spice flecks, which add a savory detail to the silky, long palate. Best from 2025 through 2040. 125 cases made, 50 cases imported.

Glass-staining violet. Deeply pitched, mineral-accented aromas of blackberry, cherry, game and violet are complemented by a suggestion of exotic spices. Youthfully chewy and appealingly sweet, offering intense black and blue fruit, floral pastille, smoky bacon and spicecake flavors, with a hint of salty olive. Finishes sweet, smoky and long, displaying finely etched mineral and floral pastille notes and steadily building tannins.
Winery
100% Syrah. Grapes are pressed with an old-style basket press and aged 2 years in 2-7 year-old barrels. Some stems are kept for vinification. "Patou" is the top site south of the village of Cornas with decomposed granite and a rich soil that gives supple tannins and perfumed wines. The oldest vines are 100 years old!

Varietal: Syrah

Whilst there remains plenty of debate over which is the 'correct' name for the Shiraz/Syrah grape varietal, nobody is in any doubt about the influence and popularity this grape has had over recent decades. For centuries, this varietal has been used in single variety and blended wines in the regions of France it is most closely associated with, yet the 20th century saw it become one of the definitive grape varietals of New World red wines, where its big, robust character and spicy, berry-rich flavors proved to be a hit with international audiences. Today, Shiraz/Syrah is said to be the seventh most widely planted grape varietal in the world, and is used for a remarkably wide variety of quality red wines – including still, sparkling and fortified varieties.

Region: Rhone Valley

In southern France, one of the primary wine regions responsible for the production of a fine and varied range of wines is the Rhone Valley. Split into two large sub-regions, this expansive valley benefits from micro-climates which allow the wineries to grow a vast array of fine grape varietals. The northern region is the more limited one in regards to the amount of varietals grown, focusing predominantly on raising excellent quality Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier vines for their distinctive and elegant range of wines. The southern region, on the other hand, has a beautifully Mediterranean climate, and is home to dozens of grape varietals which are used to produce white, red and rosé wines, alongside some of the most famous and widely loved blended wines in the world.

However, France prides itself on always putting quality before quantity, and the wide range in fine produce is a testament to the dedication and knowledge of the wineries across the country. Indeed, from rich and complex reds to light and aromatic white wines, French wines are as varied and interesting as they are enjoyable to drink, making this country a firm favorite for wine lovers across the globe.
