97-100 While I think 2019 slightly surpasses 2020 in Côte Rôtie, it might be the inverse in 2020, and the 2020 Ermitage Ex Voto is certainly fuel on the fire. I wouldn't be surprised to see this merit a triple-digit rating, and it has incredible class in its cassis and black raspberry-like fruit as well as notes of saddle leather, savory flowers, smoked tobacco, and ground pepper. This deep, powerful, full-bodied Hermitage has awesome tannins, a silky, layered mouthfeel, and boatloads of tannins. It's going to need upwards of a decade of bottle age, but this is heavenly stuff. ... More details

Fresh and dense, displaying great substance and depth. Robust oak work here and it's very tannic; a powerful, driving wine of great size and grandeur. Long and complete, it will swallow its oak in time I suspect. At the start of its 40 months in new oak barriques. Old vines from Les Bessards, Les Greffieux, L'Ermite and Les Murets.

95-97 Alluring spice-box, ripe black fruits, cured meat and a jolt of espresso introduce the 2020 Ermitage Ex-Voto. Minty undertones and peppery elements complement the complex aromatic profile. Utterly savory, the 2020 hits the palate with stunning energy and balance. Medium- to full-bodied, it could potentially outperform the head-turning 2019 once bottled.

The interplay of toasty oak with stony minerality is every bit as important to this wine as the way the plush tannins balance the gigantic forest berry fruit. Builds to a huge climax at the very structured and driving finish. Aged for 42 months in oak. Drinkable now, but best from 2027.

93-96 Blueberries and roasted meat mark the nose of the 2020 Ermitage Ex Voto, which comes from estate parcels in Les Bessards (30%), Les Greffieux (30%), Les Murets (20%) and L'Hermite (20%). Full-bodied and concentrated, it's remarkably silky and elegant on the finish already.

Varietal: Syrah

There continues to be much debate surrounding the name of the Shiraz/Syrah grape varietal, with many experts still quite unsure which came first. Indeed, even the origins of this varietal are more or less unknown, despite it being most commonly associated with the Rhone Valley of France, and New World countries, most notably Australia. However, its popularity and unique characteristics have seen it planted all over the world, where it continues to impress with its powerful flavors and wonderfully spicy notes of pepper and clove. Shiraz/Syrah wines are renowned also for their versatility, and are regularly used in single variety still and sparkling wines, as well as blended and oak aged wines which demonstrate its ability to express its terroir and secondary flavors very well.

Region: Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.
