Maxime Cheurlin is always particularly enthusiastic about this bottling from the lower part of the Les Beaux Monts, and rightly so. It's generally his densest and most backward premier cru, with 80% new wood for added backbone. It's fresh, savoury and sappy, with compact bramble and black cherry fruit, a twist of fennel and a long, tapering finish. Drinking Window: 2022 - 2030 ... More details

91-93 Aromas of cassis, blackberry, orange rind, grilled game and creamy new oak introduce the 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts, a medium to full-bodied, ample wine with a fleshy core of nicely concentrated dark, sappy fruit, chewy structuring tannins and an expansive finish. Like all of Cheurlin's wines in the last two or three years, this is considerably less advanced than his early vintages were at the same stage, making it harder to assess, so it will be more than usually interesting to revisit from bottle.

A high-toned if reserved and cool nose blends notes of pomegranate, red cherry and plenty of spice and floral influences that include orange pekoe tea, anise, sandalwood and a whiff of oak. The sleek, intense and delineated medium weight flavors are borderline pungently mineral-driven, all wrapped in a balanced and beautifully persistent finish. This is a seriously lovely effort that is a classic VRBM.

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru has a tightly wound bouquet of dark cherries mixed with raspberry and rose petals. It becomes a little candied with aeration and lacks the complexity of d'Eugénie's Aux Brûlées. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit and good depth, but maybe just a tad over-extracted toward the oaky finish. Give it two or three more years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir translates as 'black pine' in French, and is named as such due to the extremely inky color of the fruits, which hang in bunches the shape of a pine cone. Wineries often struggle with Pinot Noir vines, as more than most red wine grape varietals, they fail in hot temperatures and are rather susceptible to various diseases which can be disastrous when hoping for a late harvest. Thanks to new technologies and methods for avoiding such problems, however, the Pinot Noir grape varietal has spread across the world to almost every major wine producing country. Why? Quite simply because this is considered to be one of the finest grape varietals one can cultivate, due to the fact that it can be used to produce a wide range of excellent wines full of interesting, fresh and fascinating flavors Their thin skins result in a fairly light-bodied wine, and the juices carry beautiful notes of summer fruits, currants and berries, and many, many more.

Region: Burgundy

The beautiful region of Burgundy in France is famously home to some of the most exquisite red wines to be found anywhere on earth, and is most commonly associated with the silky, elegant and flavorful Pinot Noir varietal wines which are commonly produced there. However, the superb and mineral rich soils fed by the Rhone river, and the long hot summers and mild autumns of the region produce a wide variety of fine grapes, and as such, Burgundy produces plenty of different wines which are equally as good as the produce the region is famed for. The region of Burgundy itself has a wine-making history which stretches back at least two thousand years, and as such, it comes as no surprise that the wineries which fill the dozens of controlled appellations of the region rely heavily on traditional methods and techniques when it comes to producing their famous wines.

Country: France

Year in, year out, France enjoys its prestigious reputation as the producer of the finest wines in the world. With a wine making history which spans several thousand years and owes its expertise to the Romans, it comes as little surprise that this most highly esteemed of the Old World wine countries continues to impress and enchant both novices and experts to this day. Despite the rise in quality of wines from neighboring European countries, not to mention the New World, the French wine industry continues to boom, with up to eight billion bottles being produced in recent years. However, France prides itself on always putting quality before quantity, and the wide range in fine produce is a testament to the dedication and knowledge of the wineries across the country. Indeed, from rich and complex reds to light and aromatic white wines, French wines are as varied and interesting as they are enjoyable to drink, making this country a firm favorite for wine lovers across the globe.
