95-97 Inky magenta. Displays smoky, mineral-accented black and blue fruits, espresso, licorice and violet aromas that are complemented by cola, vanilla and black pepper suggestions. Offers palate-staining, spice-laced blueberry, cassis, kirsch and fruitcake flavors that show excellent depth and energy. The spice and floral notes echo a very long, penetrating, smoky finish shaped by steadily building but well-integrated tannins. Made with de-stemmed fruit and raised in one-third new oak. ... The wine presents enticing brambly aromatics framed by black olives, violets, saffron and peppercorn, and a subtle hint of bacon drippings. On the palate, experience a delightful interplay of these notes, with a midpalate of plums, cassis and a granitic finish. This wine is elegantly complex and, while decanting now is a tempting, cellaring through 2030+ will undoubtedly yield greater rewards. (Cellar Selection)

Rated 93 by Wine Spectator
Delivers dark plum and cherry fruit flavors that are juicy and compact in feel, with hints of cast iron, worn leather and bay leaf also flowing through. Reveals a tapenade note that filters through the finish. For fans of the old-school style. Best from 2024 through 2035. 158 cases made, 25 cases imported.
Winery
This is a mineral-driven, energetic wine with an appealing sanguine-like profile. The eastern exposure of the Côte-Bodin plot provides great freshness and acidity to the wine, where vines planted on the southern exposure give power and strong tannins. Spice and beautiful maturity from vines planted on the southwestern exposure round out this powerful wine. The terroir is forcibly apparent, while the oak treatment helps to round out the profile slightly. Blackberry and blueberry compote on the nose, backed by violette flowers.

Varietal: Syrah

There continues to be much debate surrounding the name of the Shiraz/Syrah grape varietal, with many experts still quite unsure which came first. Indeed, even the origins of this varietal are more or less unknown, despite it being most commonly associated with the Rhone Valley of France, and New World countries, most notably Australia. However, its popularity and unique characteristics have seen it planted all over the world, where it continues to impress with its powerful flavors and wonderfully spicy notes of pepper and clove. Shiraz/Syrah wines are renowned also for their versatility, and are regularly used in single variety still and sparkling wines, as well as blended and oak aged wines which demonstrate its ability to express its terroir and secondary flavors very well.

Region: Rhone Valley

The southern French wine region of the Rhone Valley has been home to wine-makers for over two thousand years, with the first grapevines of the region being cultivated in around 600 BCE when the ancient Greeks arrived with their knowledge of viticulture and eagerness to produce more wine. Today, the region is famed around the world for the excellence of its produce, and has dozens of wineries making the most of the wide range of grape varietals which flourish there. In the northern sub-region, the continental climate and brisk winds coming off the Central Massif allow wineries to grow a smaller range of varietals – predominantly Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier, whereas the southern, more Mediterranean sub-region allows far more range. Here, dozens of varietals are grown for the production of white, red and rosé wines, all packed full of flavor and able to express the unique terroir they are grown on.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.
