A proprietary red blend of Petite Sirah, Grenache, Syrah, and Zinfandel, aged seven months in 30% new oak. Orin Swift has recently opened a new tasting lounge in St. Helena, CA, a must-visit for those exploring Napa Valley. Dave Phinney, the founder of Orin Swift, remains deeply involved in making all the decisions to pick and refine these wines in the cellar. This blend bursts with explosive blue fruit aromatics, layered with violets and sweet baking spice. Medium- to full-bodied, the palate is packed with pure blue fruit, blackberry, and black cherry, all structured around a crystalline acid backbone and firm tannins. A deep and full-bodied red that’s powerful in black fruit and laced with fine-grained tannins. Blackberry, dried blueberry, black licorice and black pepper flavors backed by sturdy tannins for a grippy texture. A blend of primarily petite sirah with syrah and grenache. Drink or hold.

This wine has been a long-time favorite for many years. It is titled Abstract: The Puzzle pieces fit so nicely together. The nose has aromas of rich, ripe Red plums, Blackberry jam, notes of spiced vanilla black tea, clove, and star anise. The palate connects supple, sweet raspberry, Pink grapefruit zest, maple, and lively acidity on the finish. (Best Buy)

Rated 90 by Wine Advocate
The least expensive Orin Swift red is the 2023 Proprietary Red Abstract, a blend of 49% Petite Sirah, 23% Syrah, 21% Grenache and 7% Zinfandel. Matured just seven months in 30% new oak, there's a hint of vanilla to the berry mélange found on the nose, which includes scents of plums, blueberries and cherries. It's full-bodied in the mouth, chunky and bold, with some dark chocolate and mocha notes on the dusty finish.
Wine Spectator
A spirited red, with a savory bent. A mineral streak runs through the ripe, fleshy core of plum and berries, accented by a note of green peppercorn. The finish reveals a hint of kirsch, and the tannins are a touch rustic but fitting for the style. Syrah, Petit Sirah, Grenache and Zinfandel. Drink now through 2030. 46,000 cases made.
Winery
Aromatics with gravity, the wine pulls you in with notes of blueberry, black fig, bloodied strawberry and hints of musk and rhubarb. Bold on the entry, the palate exudes rich notes of dark plum and ripe framboise with a slightly chalky texture. The wine transitions effortlessly to a finish of black cherry, sweet licorice and some quick drying tannins.

Region: California

California has long been the New World's most important and prodigious wine producing regions, with a history which stretches back to the 18th century and the Spanish pioneers who settled here. Today, California produces vast quantities of wine, and if it were a country, it would be the fourth largest producer of wine on earth. Despite experiencing many problems in the mid 20th century, including a very serious blight which almost crippled the state's wine industry, the ideal terroir and excellent climate ensured that Californian wines soon became the envy of the New World once again. California produces a vast range of wines, and utilizes a long list of fine grape varietals, with many wineries and their produce more closely resembling those of France and other Old World countries in regards to character, practices and flavors
fields

Country: United States

The first European settlers to consider growing grapevines in the United States must have been delighted when they discovered the now famous wine regions within California, Oregon and elsewhere. Not even in the Old World are there such fertile valleys, made ideal for vine cultivation by the blazing sunshine, long, hot summers and oceanic breezes. As such, it comes as little surprise that today more than eighty-nine percent of United States wines are grown in the valleys and on the mountainsides of California, where arguably some of the finest produce in the world is found. However, American wine does not begin and end with California, and due to the vast size of the country and the incredible range of terrains and climates found within the United States, there is probably no other country on earth which produces such a massive diversity of wines. From ice wines in the northern states, to sparkling wines, aromatized wines, fortified wines, reds, whites, rosés and more, the United States has endless surprises in store for lovers of New World wines.

Appellation: Napa Valley

Anybody with an interest in New World wines is surely in agreement with the fact that Napa Valley in California is now, without much doubt, one of the world's premier wine regions. With an ideal climate for viticulture, fertile and mineral rich soils, and a dedication for quality and expression of terroir, Napa Valley wines consistently impress on the world stage with their flavors, aromas and overall character. The wineries of the valley have had plenty of success with a wide range of grape varietals, which flourish in the heat and ripen fully in the Californian sunshine each year, and the innovation and experimentation undertaken by the vintners of the region has helped create a wine culture and reputation in the valley which is unique, yet classic – a perfect blend of the new and the old.
