The winemaker's story of the vintage, the 2019 Red Wine Symmetry this year is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, and 7% Malbec, with splashes of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, aged 24 months in 80% new oak barrels, with optical sorting. It pours an inky red/ruby color and is ripe with aromas of cassis, resinous chewing tobacco, cigar box, graphite, and vanilla bean. Plush and full-bodied, it fills the palate and has ripe tannins, even acidity that accents the wine nicely, and a clean, long finish. The 2019 Symmetry is a wine the Rodney Strong team crafts each year to tell the story of the vintage - a true nod to their ultimate Bordeaux-style blend featuring all five varieties. The 2019 is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (80%), which gives it bold aromas of black licorice, anise, and currants. The long elevage of 24 months in French oak barrels (75% new) adds aromas of baking spices and a touch of vanilla beans. Eucalyptus and dried herbs like bay leaves add a fresh and savoury depth to the fruity flavours on the palate. It’s a rich and elegant wine, finishing long and satisfying.

This compelling and intricate Bordeaux blend brings classic currant, blackberry, pencil shaving and black pepper aromas, while the palate displays seamless balance between rich tannin and mouthwatering acidity and flavors of blackberry jam, dark chocolate and cassis. Brilliant now, this will age gracefully for well over a decade.

The nose is deeply scented and perfumed, with aromas of mulberries, blood plums and pomegranates. The palate is full-bodied with finely integrated tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of tobacco leaves, wild blackberries and mocha. Made from a well-integrated blend of 80% cabernet sauvignon, 8% merlot, 7% malbec, 3% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc. Drink or hold.
Wine Spectator
A core of plum and boysenberry jam is thickly coated with dark cocoa and roasted vanilla. Singed herb notes percolate on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2026. 2,000 cases made.
Winery
The Symmetry has luxurious aromas of red fruit, plum, vanilla, dusty oak and dried fruit which unfold on the palate with silky layers of dark fruits, baking spices and a supple, rich mouthfeel. This wine is harmonious and elegant with refined tannins and a long, lingering finish. Enjoy this wine now with beef stew, grilled pork tenderloin or an assortment of roasted vegetables, or cellar for enjoyment for years to come.

Region: California

California as a wine producing region has grown in size and importance considerably over the past couple of centuries, and today is the proud producer of more than ninety percent of the United States' wines. Indeed, if California was a country, it would be the fourth largest producer of wine in the world, with a vast range of vineyards covering almost half a million acres. The secret to California's success as a wine region has a lot to do with the high quality of its soils, and the fact that it has an extensive Pacific coastline which perfectly tempers the blazing sunshine it experiences all year round. The winds coming off the ocean cool the vines, and the natural valleys and mountainsides which make up most of the state's wine regions make for ideal areas in which to cultivate a variety of high quality grapes.

Country: United States

The first European settlers to consider growing grapevines in the United States must have been delighted when they discovered the now famous wine regions within California, Oregon and elsewhere. Not even in the Old World are there such fertile valleys, made ideal for vine cultivation by the blazing sunshine, long, hot summers and oceanic breezes. As such, it comes as little surprise that today more than eighty-nine percent of United States wines are grown in the valleys and on the mountainsides of California, where arguably some of the finest produce in the world is found. However, American wine does not begin and end with California, and due to the vast size of the country and the incredible range of terrains and climates found within the United States, there is probably no other country on earth which produces such a massive diversity of wines. From ice wines in the northern states, to sparkling wines, aromatized wines, fortified wines, reds, whites, rosés and more, the United States has endless surprises in store for lovers of New World wines.

Appellation: Sonoma Valley

The Valley of the Moon, as Sonoma Valley is widely known, has been one of the United States' most important and widely recognized wine regions for well over a century now, and upholds a firm belief in quality over quantity when it comes to the produce that is made in the dozens of wineries which make up the region. Helped by blazing Californian sunshine alongside mineral rich volcanic soils and geothermal springs, the grape varietals which grow in Sonoma Valley end up being packed full of fascinating flavors and aromas which are then transferred to the bottle. The past decade has seen the region expand more than ever before, and with more favorable weather conditions and a growing reputation for excellence, the wineries of Sonoma Valley are set to continue doing what they do best: making high quality, flavorful and characterful American wines.
