97-99 The most tannic of the "big three" bottlings this year, the 2018 Cote Rotie la Cote Blonde features elegant hints of mixed herbs entwined around bold boysenberry fruit. It's medium to full-bodied, with plentiful fine-grained tannins that firm up on the long finish. Embryonic, but oh so promising, it should blossom in another five years or so. ... More details

A wine that’s going to push the upper limits of my scale, the 2018 Côte Rôtie Côte Blonde has a wonderful sense of opulence and elegance paired with huge minerality and power. Giving up primordial notes of perfectly ripe currants, new saddle leather, spice, and wildflowers, it has a magical texture, huge richness and depth, loads of tannins, and a huge finish. It made my pulse jump.

Deep, glistening ruby. Intensely perfumed, sharply delineated red and blue fruits, incense, candied violet and Moroccan spices on the seductively perfumed nose. Stains the palate with juicy, mineral-driven cherry, black raspberry and blueberry flavors, which are complemented by suggestions of olive paste, candied flowers and allspice. Shows superb focus and energy on the strikingly long finish, which features harmonious tannins and reverberating floral and mineral notes. All whole clusters.

This is full-bodied, ripe and round, but also open, beautifully fragrant, elegant and expressive, displaying potpourri, lily, rose, raspberry and blackberry fruit. There's a solid tannic base, almost too tannic at this stage, but they are fine-grained and largely fruit-derived, just slightly dry. Rich in alcohol, but you don't really feel it, more the opulence and richness. Arguably not the finest or most elegant vintage, but nonetheless a wine full of pleasure. Drinking Window 2024 - 2033.

This red has a dark and winey profile, with black currant and blackberry fruit mixed with anise and mesquite, black tea and dark olive. All of this is nicely knit through the mineral-driven, well-structured finish, thanks to terrific mouthwatering acidity. Best from 2023 through 2035. 450 cases made.

Varietal: Syrah

There are few red wine grape varietals in the world quite as versatile as that of the Shiraz/Syrah vine. These powerful darkly colored grapes are responsible for several wildly popular wines, and are used in the production of still, fortified and sparkling wines, all which carry its magnificent strong flavors very well indeed. This grape varietal is a robust one, easily adaptable to several different climates and terroirs, and yet has a strong ability to express the conditions it is grown in when it ferments and is drank. Most typically, Shiraz/Syrah wines are known for spicy flavors with a big fruity punch, and the fact that they can demonstrate the decisions made by the winemakers in their secondary flavors very clearly.

Region: Rhone Valley

There are few wine regions in the world with a history as long and illustrious as that of the Rhone Valley in France. For over two thousand years, wines have been produced in this region, benefited by the excellent, mineral-rich soils of the region, and the varied climate which allows a wide range of grape varietals to grow. The Rhone Valley is now split into two quite separate regions, with the north part being characterized by its cooler, continental climate and the limited number of grape varietals grown, and the southern sub-region being perfect for growing a wide range of grapes, and producing an exciting number of different wine styles. The Rhone Valley is associated with elegant, flavorful wines, and certain grape varietals such as Viognier and Syrah, which are adept at expressing the finer features of their terroir.

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year. Not only are the finest red wines in the world said to come from the beautiful regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but elsewhere in the country we find the Champagne region, and areas such as the Rhone Valley and the Loire, whose white wines consistently receive awards and accolades by the plenty. This range is a result of the great variety of climatic conditions and terrain found in France, coupled with generations of wine makers working within single appellations. Their knowledge of specific terroirs and grape varieties has, over time, perfected the production of wines within their region, and the end results continue to impress the world to this day.
