After tasting Rostaing's 2019 Côte Brune, it would be difficult for any wine to measure up, but the 2019 Cote Rotie la Landonne comes darn close and is a more-than-acceptable second choice. Notes of violets and red raspberries lead the way on the nose, backed by the vineyard's signature roasted meat and black olives. Medium to full-bodied, incredibly concentrated and worthy of two decades of cellaring, yet not unapproachable even now, this is another suburb effort to emerge from Rostaing's magical vineyard holdings. ... Lastly, the 2019 Côte Rôtie La Landonne flirts with perfection and has a heavenly, textbook Landonne nose of smoked meats, woodsmoke, truffle, crushed stone, and assorted red and black fruits. It’s powerful yet opulent, with velvety tannins, a beautifully layered mouthfeel, and one hell of a great finish. Count yourself lucky if you’re able to latch onto any of these 2019s from Rostaing! This beauty will shine for 25-30 years if stored correctly.

Complex array of dark fruit preserve, floral, spice and savory herb qualities on the highly perfumed nose; a smoky mineral note gains volume as the wine opens up. Shows excellent clarity and spicy lift to the concentrated cherry liqueur, blueberry and spicecake flavors, which slowly expand through the midpalate. Blends depth and energy with a sure hand and shows impressive energy and mineral thrust on a very long, youthfully tannic finish.

Solidly built, with a core of dark and winey black cherry and black currant fruit flavors that meld steadily with hints of cast iron, pepper, bay leaf and warm earth, followed by a smoldering edge and some latent grip on the long finish. Needs some time to unwind fully. Best from 2024 through 2038. 400 cases made.

Closed, herbal and brooding - giving little away for now on the nose. It's big but by no means fat with a strong inner architecture. Brooding with quite burly tannins, not the finest this year - there's a distinct grain. Alcohol however is in check, though it's a potent wine. Acidity is low, but it feels in no way flabby - quite the opposite, it's strict and austere. Needs long ageing. Slightly green tannins on the finish. Four weeks in tank, 18 months in oak, limited new oak, natural yeasts, and as many stems as possible. Drinking Window 2026 - 2037.

Varietal: Syrah

Whilst there remains plenty of debate over which is the 'correct' name for the Shiraz/Syrah grape varietal, nobody is in any doubt about the influence and popularity this grape has had over recent decades. For centuries, this varietal has been used in single variety and blended wines in the regions of France it is most closely associated with, yet the 20th century saw it become one of the definitive grape varietals of New World red wines, where its big, robust character and spicy, berry-rich flavors proved to be a hit with international audiences. Today, Shiraz/Syrah is said to be the seventh most widely planted grape varietal in the world, and is used for a remarkably wide variety of quality red wines â€“ including still, sparkling and fortified varieties.

The southern French wine region of the Rhone Valley has been home to wine-makers for over two thousand years, with the first grapevines of the region being cultivated in around 600 BCE when the ancient Greeks arrived with their knowledge of viticulture and eagerness to produce more wine. Today, the region is famed around the world for the excellence of its produce, and has dozens of wineries making the most of the wide range of grape varietals which flourish there. In the northern sub-region, the continental climate and brisk winds coming off the Central Massif allow wineries to grow a smaller range of varietals â€“ predominantly Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier, whereas the southern, more Mediterranean sub-region allows far more range. Here, dozens of varietals are grown for the production of white, red and rosÃ© wines, all packed full of flavor and able to express the unique terroir they are grown on.
