An enormously dense and compact Mosel riesling with a delicate exotic character, but also unique spice. All of this is married to a luscious body that’s not a jot too much, the finish extremely long and pure in spite of the obvious influence of noble rot (floral honey). Still needs some years of bottle age for all to completely integrate with the richness, then it will come over distinctly drier than it does now. Drinkable now, but best from 2026. ... More details

From vines up to 100 years old that were trained on single poles adjacent to the Mosel and picked at 97° Oechsle, the golden-yellow colored 2022 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Rotlay opens with a delicate yet also intense nose of fully ripe and overripe fruits intermingled with delicate notes of crushed slate. Supple, lush and intense yet also refined and with salivating salinity on the finish, this is a rich but very delicate and balanced Auslese in the richer, sweeter botrytis style. In fact, this wine is based on a higher percentage of botrytis grapes every year, including 2022. The finish is stimulating, savory and crisp. 7.5% stated alcohol plus 101.7 grams per liter of residual sugar. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2023.

The 2022 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese Rotlay is from the warmest part of Rotlay, on own-rooted vines on average 100 years old, with very low yields; the proximity to the river encourages botrytis. This selection contains around 30% botrytized fruit. Slatey perfume, petrichor, pepper and crushed tansy are vivid and savory on the nose. More air almost expresses itself in an ozone lift. These aromatic notions wrap themselves around peach, and on the palate, this sense of saltiness heightens sweet peach, and savory nature comes to full expression. This tingles and sprays, adds orange, kumquat peel, and pepper, and finishes triumphantly at 102g/L of residual sweetness. (Luscious)

Varietal: Riesling

Although they originated in Germany's beautiful Rhine Valley, the Riesling grape soon spread around the world, where it thrives in many countries with a colder climate which can support this pale and unique grapes. Riesling grapes are considered one of the finest varietals on earth, capable of expressing fascinating features of the soil type they are grown on, resulting in some highly interesting wines with plenty to offer those who are looking for something different. Riesling grapes are also noted for their aromas, which tend to be highly perfumed, floral and often with smoky notes accentuating their unusual flavor Because this was always the predominant grape grown in Germany and other such countries, Riesling wineries have always been keen to experiment with its range. This has resulted in dry white wines, sparkling wines, semi sweet wines and several others, but the finest examples are usually considered to be the Riesling dessert wines. These are occasionally made with unusual processes, including the 'eiswine' method, in which the grapes are allowed to freeze in the early frosts, or by allowing the development of 'noble rot', which withers the grapes and results in some truly spectacular and unusual flavors.

Country: Germany

As in many Old World countries, the rise of viticulture in Germany came about as a result of the Roman Empire, who saw the potential for vine cultivation in the vast flatlands around the base of the Rhine valley. Indeed, for over a thousand years, Germany's wine production levels were enormous, with much of the south of the country being used more or less exclusively for growing grapes. Over time, this diminished to make way for expanding cities and other types of industries, but Southern Germany remains very much an important wine region within Europe, with many beautifully balanced and flavorful German wines being prized by locals and international wine lovers alike. The hills around Baden-Baden and Mannheim are especially noteworthy, as these produce the high end of the characteristic semi-sweet white wines which couple so perfectly with German cheeses and pickled vegetables. However, all of Germany's wine producing regions have something special and unique to offer, and are a joy to explore and experience.
