The 2020 Bella's Garden Shiraz is from the Barossa Valley and gives us all the savory red dirt, meat and exotic spice in the mouth. This is dense, almost bullish, with very good intensity of flavor in the mouth—incredible line, actually. The tannins are omnipresent and finely knit, although they are robust, an interesting contrast of the two things. It is bloody and velvety and morphs in the mouth. It has balanced tannin and is very plush. ... More details

Smooth and polished, but still dense and concentrated, with spiced plum, red fruit and heavy licorice and fennel seed nuances, plus Earl Grey tea, dried floral and fresh loamy details. Harmonious and focused on the long finish. Drink now through 2029. 2,000 cases made.

This is a concentrated, rich, old-school style Shiraz with notes of cherry cola, dusting polish and blackberry jam. There's a fair lick of oak showing here. The palate is equally high octane, with powerful tannins, oodles of tangy fruit and spice. It's not for the faint of heart, but that lift of acidity keep things in check, and suggests a good deal of aging in this bottle's future.

Tons of plums, black cherries and blackberries fill out this generous and quite firmly tannic Barossa Valley shiraz. Some may find the self-confidently dry tannins a bit much at the finish, but they easily dominate the sweetness and keep this bold wine on track. Good length. Screw cap.

Varietal: Syrah

The Shiraz or Syrah grape varietal has seen a huge surge in popularity over the past few decades, partly due to the fact that more and more wineries around the world are beginning to plant and process this robust and flavorful grape for international audiences. This varietal has plenty going for it, and has the special ability of being able to clearly express positive features of its terroir in the bottle, alongside its characteristic flavors of dark berries, pepper and other spices. Shiraz/Syrah is also notably a highly versatile grape, and has been successfully used in several type of still red wine, as well as excellent sparkling and fortified wines. It is also regularly used as a blending grape, where it is prized for its ability to add a bold and strong, spicy punch to mellow, blended wines.

Region: Barossa

Australia's Barossa Valley has, over the past few decades, been catapulted to the forefront of Australia's wine industry as a result of the quality produce which is made there, and the dedication the winemakers of the region have for great flavor The original German settlers in the area may have set up the first traditional style vineyards, but today there are plenty of wineries exploring the possibilities of the region and utilizing modern technology to make the most of their vines. The region itself is surprisingly temperate, with hot valley floors and cooler slopes allowing the grape varietals to reach full ripeness. Although the region is most closely associated with Australia's much loved Shiraz grapes, there are now plenty of different varietals being cultivated in the Barossa Valley, and great success has been had with everything from Chardonnay to Semillon, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Country: Australia

Whilst every Australian state has some level of wine production, it is in South Australia and on the island of Tasmania where the finest wines are made to the highest quantities. Here, the scorching Australian sun is a little tamer, and the heat is tempered by brisk oceanic winds, making the climate of these regions ideal for vineyard cultivation. The Tamar Valley on Tasmania has been making waves internationally in recent years, as both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grape varietals are thriving there and resulting in hugely flavorful wines, which are at once distinctly Australian, yet remain unique and interesting enough to surprise and impress. Elsewhere in the country, the Syrah grape (known locally as Shiraz) reigns supreme, as the long, hot summers allow these grapes to ripen fully and lend their intensely fruit-forward character to the ruby red Australian wines, which have such international appeal.
