#26 in Top 100 Wines of France, 2024. Staggering nose of red fruit with fascinating mineral and meaty undertones. Gigantic concentration on the medium- to full-bodied palate, the power tightly reined in, but nonetheless driving the extremely long and precise finish that has great stony expression. A cuvee of wines from the granitic Les Bressards section of the hill of Hermitage and lower lying vineyards with more clay in the soil. 100% whole cluster fermentation, then bottled unfiltered and unfined. Drink from 2026. ... More details

Rhône enthusiasts know how good the 2022 vintage is chez Sorrel, and the 2022 Hermitage is a superb rendition. Unfurling from the glass with aromas of violets, blackberries, smoke, spices, bay leaf and cedar, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and textured with structured yet delicate tannins with a fleshy texture that's refined, pure and mineral.

An elegant, savory, unadorned version that is dense and concentrated but never heavy. Shows the power and elegance of Syrah in Hermitage. Violet, cherry and smoked meat flavors are flecked with earth and brown bread notes, anchored with bolts of iron, and streaked with tar and salt on the persistent finish, held with muscular tannins. Oak sits in the backdrop, so the freshness and energy really come through. Best from 2027 through 2042. 10 cases imported.

The 2022 Hermitage has closed down. Time in the glass gradually unlocks notes of ripe black fruit, graphite, crushed violet, stemmy subtleties and cedar nuances. Tight and firmly structured, the full-bodied 2022 imparts substantial flavor concentration and overall intensity. I suspect the ship to enjoy it in its youth has sailed, and lucky owners of it are required to wait until 2030 before pulling the cork. This is one of the sleepers of the vintage.
Winery
Aromas of wild berries, violets and black pepper. Firm tannins with a dense structure. Pair with hearty meat dishes - steak, prime rib and flavorful cheeses.

Varietal: Syrah

There are few red wine grape varietals in the world quite as versatile as that of the Shiraz/Syrah vine. These powerful darkly colored grapes are responsible for several wildly popular wines, and are used in the production of still, fortified and sparkling wines, all which carry its magnificent strong flavors very well indeed. This grape varietal is a robust one, easily adaptable to several different climates and terroirs, and yet has a strong ability to express the conditions it is grown in when it ferments and is drank. Most typically, Shiraz/Syrah wines are known for spicy flavors with a big fruity punch, and the fact that they can demonstrate the decisions made by the winemakers in their secondary flavors very clearly.

Region: Rhone Valley

For over two thousand years, the southern French region of the Rhone Valley has been home to wine-makers and wineries of many different types. The ancient Greeks were the first to discover that a wide range of grape varietals can flourish in the rich soils and micro-climates which typify the region, and little has changed to this day. In the modern age, the Rhone Valley is recognized around the world as the home of excellent quality white, red and rosé wines, as well as some of the most highly respected blended wines on earth. The region is split into two distinctive sub-regions, with the cooler, continental northern sub-region producing primarily Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines of exquisite quality, and the hotter southern sub-region growing a much wider variety of grapes.

However, France prides itself on always putting quality before quantity, and the wide range in fine produce is a testament to the dedication and knowledge of the wineries across the country.
