Aged in 30% new oak for 20 months. A highly aromatic nose, showing blackberry, blackcurrant and mineral hot slate aromas. It's very full-bodied and very straight. The intense, dry, salty, mineral tannins are very much of the terroir. The wine has thrilling cool fruit and is exceptionally well balanced, it's so enlivening. Like scaling a jet-black granite cliff face, there is relief and texture to its cool, glistening surface - but it's as hard as nails. This will be exceptionally good when it's ready.

The full-bodied 2016 Ermitage l'Ermite is the biggest, most tannic of Chapoutier's current releases. Don't be fooled by the upfront aromas of confiture de cassis, this rich, chewy wine needs 6-7 years of cellaring to near approachability. But what a maturity that should prove to be, with hints of cedar framing ripe, mouthwatering fruit and savory overtones of black olive and licorice, all backed by the sensation of powdered granite on an almost endless finish.

Steeped and focused black cherry, black currant and plum fruit flavors are carried by a substantial but very refined structure, ending with waves of anise, smoldering tobacco and black tea. An iron accent at the end adds further definition and length. Seriously long. Best from 2021 through 2040. 20 cases imported.

Vivid, glass-staining purple. Potent, sharply delineated dark fruit preserve, Moroccan spice, licorice and exotic floral qualities on the hugely perfumed nose. Utterly stains the palate with sweet blueberry, cherry liqueur, spicecake and violet pastille flavors that show an uncanny blend of richness and energy. The floral and spice notes build steadily through an endless, gently tannic finish that shows superb clarity and mineral drive. This wine's sheer sex appeal will make it delicious relatively soon after release, but its depth and balance should easily carry it through its 30th birthday (if one has the patience) and probably longer.

This has super, deep, black fruit, dusted in dark pepper and spice. It smells so pristine and fresh. The palate is immaculately structured, on fine, strong, tannin lines with a deep, black-cherry, licorice and mineral thread. Super-intense, super-fine and super-impressive 2016 Hermitage here. Rich, concentrated blueberry and blackberry flavors are penetrating in this full-bodied, richly textured Syrah. It's a densely concentrated Hermitage framed by fine, gripping tannins and a firm mineral backbone. Best opened from 2023, it should improve well through 2036 and hold further. (Cellar Selection)

Varietal: Syrah

Whilst there remains plenty of debate over which is the 'correct' name for the Shiraz/Syrah grape varietal, nobody is in any doubt about the influence and popularity this grape has had over recent decades. For centuries, this varietal has been used in single variety and blended wines in the regions of France it is most closely associated with, yet the 20th century saw it become one of the definitive grape varietals of New World red wines, where its big, robust character and spicy, berry-rich flavors proved to be a hit with international audiences. Today, Shiraz/Syrah is said to be the seventh most widely planted grape varietal in the world, and is used for a remarkably wide variety of quality red wines – including still, sparkling and fortified varieties.

Today, the region is famed around the world for the excellence of its produce, and has dozens of wineries making the most of the wide range of grape varietals which flourish there. In the northern sub-region, the continental climate and brisk winds coming off the Central Massif allow wineries to grow a smaller range of varietals – predominantly Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier, whereas the southern, more Mediterranean sub-region allows far more range.
