Parafada is one of the best known MGAs in Serralunga, located between Gabutti and Lazzarito with a mostly southern exposure. Massolino's vineyards are at 330 metres above sea level and produce one of the most representative wines of the MGA. Intense smoky woodland notes emerge first, then wild strawberry and darker violet-soaked fruits. There's serious elegance on the palate, with near-perfect tannins (not only in the context of the vintage), a youthful character, and a dense mid-palate of lifted acidity and filigreed depth. A great wine but not so easy to drink now because of its youthful restraint. ... More details

Forest floor, grilled herb, iris and camphor aromas appear in the glass. Combining structure and finesse, the firm palate delivers ripe Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, baking spice and licorice alongside tightly knit, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2025–2032.

Rated 95 - The Parafada vineyard is in Serralunga. It is situated at 320 meters above sea level with a direct southern exposure and it is protected by winds and bad weather by a ridge. The vines are 60-years-old and the soils are marl and limestone. This 2017, in spite of the heat of the vintage in the summer has vibrancy, freshness, and charm. The Massolino Barolo Parafada 2017 has a very bright ruby color and an open, intensely perfumed nose with notes of exotic spice, cherries, roses, and lovely floral aromas. It is juicy, vibrant and stylish with the superfine tannins feeling gentler than those in the Margheria. Wait two to three years and keep up to 25. - The Wine Independent

The 2017 Barolo Parafada has pure aromas of dried red cherry, tar, cinnamon, and dried roses. There is lift on the palate with pomegranate, tobacco, and dried orange zest. The tannins are firm, though not a touch more linear than some of the other sites, with a bit more approachability now. Drink 2023-2042.

The 2017 Barolo Parafada comes across as compact and closed in on itself. There is plenty of depth and density, but the Parafada is very tightly wound at this stage. It will be interesting to see what time in bottle brings. Today, the 2017 feels squashed and compact.

Expressive, this Barolo evokes macerated plum, cherry, rose hip and chalky mineral flavors. Fresh and firm, with a long, energetic finish. Best from 2025 through 2040. 410 cases made.

green grapes

Varietal: Nebbiolo

The dusty purple grapes of the Nebbiolo variety are widely considered to be amongst the finest in the world, and hold many unique characteristics which have secured their place in wine making history. Indeed, almost all of the most respected and sought after red wines of Italy are made using this grape varietal, and it wasn't long before several New World wineries started experimenting with the fruit of this special vine, too. Nebbiolo grapes are renowned for their ability to age beautifully, with their strong and dense tannins mellowing out and becoming more balanced inside the oak. Alongside this, they hold some of the most complex and exciting flavors to be found in any grape, which range from gorgeous notes of black truffle, to aromatic violets and tobacco tones.

Region: Piedmont

n Italy, the region most closely associated with excellent quality red wines and characterful sparkling wines is Piedmont. This alpine region is located in the north-west of the country, and features beautiful foothills of the impressive mountain range which forms the nearby border between Italy, France and Switzerland. Wineries in Piedmont work with the Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grapes which thrive in the warm, dry summers and cooler autumns, as well as the beautifully expressive Moscato grapes which are used for the sparkling Asti wines the region is famed for. For generations, these wineries have perfected the art of aging their red wines, and blending grape varietals to get the most out of each one, leading to a region known all over the world for the exceptional quality of its produce.

Country: Italy

Italy is recognised as being one of the finest wine producing countries in the world, and it isn't difficult to see why. With a vast amount of land across the country used primarily for vineyard cultivation and wine production, each region of Italy manages to produce a wide range of excellent quality wines, each representative of the region it is produced in. Any lover of Italian wines will be able to tell you of the variety the country produces, from the deliciously astringent and alpine-fresh wines of the northern borders, to the deliciously jammy and fruit-forward wines of the south and the Italian islands. Regions such as Barolo are frequently compared with Bordeaux and Burgundy in France, as their oak aged red wines have all the complexity and earthy, spicy excellence of some of the finest wines in the world, and the sparkling wines of Asti and elsewhere in Italy can easily challenge and often exceed the high standards put forward by Champagne. Thanks to excellent terrain and climatic conditions, Italy has long since proven itself a major player in the world of wines, and long may this dedication to quality and excellence continue.
