Notes of mentholated herbs combine with balsamic spice, bull's blood, damp earth, tart cranberry and ashen stone aromas as the imposing 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Raunate smolders in the glass. It opens with a balanced inner sweetness and juicy acidity. Silky textures flow across the palate, ushering in ripe wild berry fruits and spices. A web of fine tannins forms through the finish yet doesn't get in the way of the 2020s momentum. There's a beautiful balance and structure here that is atypical of the vintage. Well done.

A firm and fresh Brunello with medium body, fine tannins and a crisp finish. The tannins are very energetic. Lively wine. Elegance with structure. Drink or hold.

Smoky tones of barbecue ember and sweet spice give this wine a bold start. The Mocali 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna delle Raunate is tense and firm, with tight tannins stitched into thick fruity fiber. That nervous core is softened to a great extent by ripe berry tones and delicate aromas of pressed rose petal.

Wrapped in an embrace of vanilla, coconut and sweet spices, this red also reveals cherry, strawberry and floral flavors. Firm and tight on the lengthy finish, where the tannins flex their muscles. Best from 2027 through 2043. 500 cases made, 150 cases imported.

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively – full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.
