93-96 A restrained and markedly spicy nose blends notes of ripe white and yellow peach with those of acacia blossom, rose petal and jasmine tea-like nuances. Once again there is a really lovely texture to the highly energetic broad-shouldered flavors that possess very good if not great density, but the mouthfeel is quite sleek and extends to the austere, balanced and precise finale. This is also exceptionally classy and beautifully well-balanced and should amply repay extended cellaring.

Two casks purchased as must from a large holding on the Puligny side of Montrachet. Here the grapes were picked very late, at almost 15% potential alcohol, and this is really extra-rich, with super-ripe apple fruit, spice and a floral note that is almost honeysuckle. Despite all this richness, the terroir is such that there is still enough freshness on the palate to bring the wine back into an elegant balance.

91-93 The 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru comprises two barrels of purchased must this year. "There was incredible ripeness here, up to 15° final alcohol," Eric Suremain forewarned me. I have to say that this comes across on the powerful nose, which does not quite articulate the nuance of this legendary vineyard as a cooler vintage might. The palate is balanced with a fine bead of acidity that maintains freshness. A heady and opulent Montrachet - for want of a better word, quite "fun" to drink - but is it a vrai Montrachet? This is not the only address in the Côte d'Or where I preferred the Bâtard-Montrachet.

A ripe nose, very profound and classy. The most alcohol, too and the thickest texture. Massive, long, pungent and persistent fruit. Very, very long on the palate, warm and intense. The flavors are bursting out and there’s amazing length on the palate and it finishes with a touch of salt. An amazing wine, and it stands apart from the others. The flavors continue on after you drink it. Killer.

Varietal: Chardonnay

Of all the white wine grape varietals, surely the one which has spread the furthest and is most widely appreciated is the Chardonnay. This green skinned grape is now grown all over the Old and New Worlds, from New Zealand to the Americas, from England to Chile, and is one of the first varietals people think of when considering white wine grapes. Perhaps this is because of its huge popularity which reached a peak in the 1990s, thanks to new technologies combining with traditional methods to bring the very best features out of the Chardonnay grape, and allow its unique qualities to shine through. Most fine Chardonnay wines use a process known as malolactic fermentation, wherein the malic acids in the grape juice are converted to lactic acids, allowing a creamier, buttery nature to come forward in the wine. No grape varietal is better suited to this process than Chardonnay, which manages to balance these silky, creamy notes with fresh white fruit flavors beautifully.

Region: Burgundy

In the beautiful French wine region of Burgundy, there is archaeological evidence to suggest that there has been viticultural activity going on for at least two thousand years. To add to this, there are early written records praising the exceptional wines produced in this region dating back to the 6th century, making Burgundy one of the oldest established and still operational wine regions in the world. The region is most commonly associated with fine red wines, with Pinot Noir being the primary grape varietal grown on its rolling hillsides and gently sloping valleys. However, Chardonnay grapes are also produced in abundance for the production of their fine white wines, with both varietals benefiting greatly from the region's warm, hot summers and the superb soils which make up the terroir.
