This super-cuvée is made using only the first bunch after the graft on vines at least 100 years of age and is not made every year. The 2019 is spectacular. Slightly reserved at present, the tightly packed black and red fruit opens on the palate, accented with notes of violets, mineral, earth and wild herbs. This is powerful and rich, with firm tannins, lots of body, and the ability to age almost indefinitely. ... More details

92-94 The 2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, raw cocoa, loamy soil and incense. Medium to full-bodied, deep and elegantly muscular, it has lively acids, powdery tannins and a classically balanced, youthfully reserved profile. It's a touch finer-boned and more vibrant than its 2018 counterpart at the same stage.

Initially there is enough reduction to notice though several minutes of aggressive swirling eventually coaxes notably floral aromas of various red berries, warm earth, spice and a hint of exotic tea, all surrounded by subtle but perceptible wood. The dense, powerful and muscular flavors possess excellent intensity before culminating in a dusty, sappy and youthfully austere finish. The supporting tannins are dense but reasonably fine and this should easily reward 15+ years of cellaring though be approachable after 7 to 10 years.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir translates as 'black pine' in French, and is named as such due to the extremely inky color of the fruits, which hang in bunches the shape of a pine cone. Wineries often struggle with Pinot Noir vines, as more than most red wine grape varietals, they fail in hot temperatures and are rather susceptible to various diseases which can be disastrous when hoping for a late harvest. Thanks to new technologies and methods for avoiding such problems, however, the Pinot Noir grape varietal has spread across the world to almost every major wine producing country. Why? Quite simply because this is considered to be one of the finest grape varietals one can cultivate, due to the fact that it can be used to produce a wide range of excellent wines full of interesting, fresh and fascinating flavors Their thin skins result in a fairly light-bodied wine, and the juices carry beautiful notes of summer fruits, currants and berries, and many, many more.

Region: Burgundy

There are few more famous wine regions in the world than Burgundy, and this special area has given much to raise the profile of fine French wines around the world. Although most commonly associated with excellent quality red wines made with the Pinot Noir varietal, this region is home to several red and white varietals and produces and impressive range of wines, from still to sparkling, dry to sweet, full bodied and aged, and from to light and drinkable. The region of Burgundy has been producing excellent wines for centuries, with much evidence to suggest that the ancient Gauls were the first to cultivate the native vines which flourish here in the warm summers, and on the excellent soil fed by local rivers. This type of heritage has led to a wine industry highly unique, deeply traditional, and with an exquisite reputation to uphold.

However, France prides itself on always putting quality before quantity, and the wide range in fine produce is a testament to the dedication and knowledge of the wineries across the country.
