From a steep vineyard next to the Doctor, the 2022 Bernkastel Graben Riesling GG opens with a clear, deep and flinty bouquet of ripe and healthy Riesling berries. Lush and round on the palate, this is a dense and intense, firmly structured, very mineral and sustainable Graben with fine tannins and well-integrated salinity. This is a young but mouth-filling Riesling that needs to be aged for at least another 4-5 years. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2023.

91-93 The 2022 Riesling Bernkasterler Graben GG is from one parcel that makes just one Fuderto the left of the Doctor vineyard, planted in the early 1940s on its own roots and dense single stakes. It faces southwest on blue Devonian slate. 2020 was the first vintage this wine was made dry; previously, it was usually made as a Spätlese or Auslese. The nose opens with a subtle, creamy citrus lift, turning into a pithy citrus feel on the palate, lending flavor and texture. The palate tapers beautifully from a medium body with quite some substance to a lemon pith finish. Statuesque and vivid. (Dry)

Pretty peach and dried flower notes are sleek and streaming in this elegant Riesling, flecked with dried hay and ginger. Bitter mineral elements bring grip to the finish, which is clean and pure. Distinctive and long. Drink now through 2030. 60 cases imported.

Varietal: Riesling

Riesling grapes have produced some of the finest wines of the Old World over the past couple of centuries, and are quickly becoming much loved by New World audiences as their influence continues to spread across the globe. They are generally grown and cultivated in colder climates, as is found in their native Germany, where they have the remarkable ability to pick up and express interesting features of their terroir, or the ground on which they are grown. As such, wine enthusiasts generally find Riesling one of the more interesting white grape varietals, as they produce aromas which are highly floral and perfumed alongside both fruit flavors and refreshing notes of stone and alpine water, depending on where they have been grown. Furthermore, Riesling grapes produce a large variety of fine wines, from still to sparkling, sweet to dry, and wineries which work with this grape have long since been experimenting with both frozen and rotten grapes to find out just how versatile and exciting this varietal can be.

Country: Germany

As in many Old World countries, the rise of viticulture in Germany came about as a result of the Roman Empire, who saw the potential for vine cultivation in the vast flatlands around the base of the Rhine valley. Indeed, for over a thousand years, Germany's wine production levels were enormous, with much of the south of the country being used more or less exclusively for growing grapes. Over time, this diminished to make way for expanding cities and other types of industries, but Southern Germany remains very much an important wine region within Europe, with many beautifully balanced and flavorful German wines being prized by locals and international wine lovers alike. The hills around Baden-Baden and Mannheim are especially noteworthy, as these produce the high end of the characteristic semi-sweet white wines which couple so perfectly with German cheeses and pickled vegetables. However, all of Germany's wine producing regions have something special and unique to offer, and are a joy to explore and experience.
