The 2018 Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru, which comes from the namesake lieu-dit, is one of Véronique Drouhin's favorite crus and, in her opinion, one of their most consistent. It has a very well-defined bouquet of blackberry, raspberry, pressed iris flowers and incense that immediately seduces the senses. The palate is medium-bodied with fine supple tannins and a perfect line of acidity, the 40% whole cluster lending a little pepperiness toward the pixelated finish. An exuberantly spicy and ultra-floral-inflected nose conveys notably ripe yet fresh aromas of plum, black raspberry and more subtle touch of wood. There is excellent mid-palate concentration to the delicious and mouth coating larger-scaled flavors that are finer while still displaying terrific power on the youthfully austere and equally serious finale. This is a big Grands Ech with a tannic spine to match to this is a 'buy and forget you own it' wine.

In its youth, the wine displays aromas of great finesse, reminiscent of cherry and dark chocolate or cocoa bean, which is a delicate and sought after characteristic of this wine. As the wine matures, these aromas evolve towards other refined nuances evoking undergrowth, truffle, fine leather and sometimes light notes of cigar or cedar wood. The result is of great elegance and breed. The tannins are refined and the silk and velvet of the body are a perfect match. Very long aftertaste in which some of the aromas previously encountered are again in evidence and create the most elegant sensation.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir translates as 'black pine' in French, and is named as such due to the extremely inky color of the fruits, which hang in bunches the shape of a pine cone. Wineries often struggle with Pinot Noir vines, as more than most red wine grape varietals, they fail in hot temperatures and are rather susceptible to various diseases which can be disastrous when hoping for a late harvest. Thanks to new technologies and methods for avoiding such problems, however, the Pinot Noir grape varietal has spread across the world to almost every major wine producing country. Why? Quite simply because this is considered to be one of the finest grape varietals one can cultivate, due to the fact that it can be used to produce a wide range of excellent wines full of interesting, fresh and fascinating flavors Their thin skins result in a fairly light-bodied wine, and the juices carry beautiful notes of summer fruits, currants and berries, and many, many more.
