An attractive Latour-Martillac showing ripe black cherries, dark plums and touches of cigar and fine spices. An underlying mineral twist makes it even more interesting. Juicy and ripe but fresh, with a medium to full body and a matrix of fine, firm tannins beneath the fruit, which shows good fleshiness. Beautifully balanced and long. Drink from 2027.

Youthfully compact, with its core of red and black currant preserve sitting behind a mix of warm tar, alder and chestnut notes. Dark tobacco and leather notes stretch out the finish and add a textural element as well, as the fruit keeps pace. Solid. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2027 through 2040.

The 2022 Latour-Martillac is s powerful, brooding wine, just as it was en primeur. A blast of dark red fruit, leather, spice, dried herbs and licorice are all delineated in the glass. The 2022 packs a pretty intense punch. A few years in bottle will help to some degree.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

The Bordeaux method of blending quality grape varietals is something which has long been imitated and envied around the world. Whilst there are six Bordeaux grape varietals allowed for the production of red wine in this region of France – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Carménere – the most common and widely used combination involves a careful blend of the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, usually with a small percentage of Petit Verdot to boost the overall flavor and balance things out. This process accentuates the finer points of all these varietals, and takes the astringency of one type whilst rounding it out and mellowing it with the light tannins and fleshiness of another. The results are rarely short of spectacular, and are perfect for oak aging, where the flavorful magic of Bordeaux wine making can really take place, and the complex aromas and characteristics can truly come forward.
