The 2014 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru comes from two suppliers, but one was dropped and replaced after last year since they felt quality was not high enough. It was picked on September 19 and 22, completely destemmed and aged for 17 months in oak. I found this showing just a touch of reduction on the nose, but with encouragement it reveals attractive blackberry and bilberry aromas, a touch of violet with time. The palate is smooth on the entry, supple in the mouth with well judged acidity, a pinch of white pepper towards the finish that (like other 2014s at this stage) is structured so that it feels Mazoyères in style. I think they made a good decision giving that grower his P45 -- this is excellent. ... More details

Saturated bright, dark red. Musky aromas of raspberry, rose petal and smoked meat display some funky underbrushy reduction. Then pure, bright and concentrated but backward in the mouth, showing a serious tannic backbone for aging. Very promising for this bottling chez Drouhin.

Wood smoke and toasty spice notes envelop the black cherry and earth flavors in this firm yet fluid red. Though tannic, this is fresh and packed with flavor that resonates on the long finish. Best from 2020 through 2033. 15 cases imported.

Mild reduction renders the nose difficult to read so I would suggest decanting this if you're tempted to try a bottle in its youth. There is by contrast good freshness and verve to the lightly mineral-inflected and well-detailed medium weight flavors that possess a fine sense of energy on the clean, slightly austere and saline-infused finish. This is prettier than it is deep though this too should repay cellaring it for 10 to 12 years.

A generous and distinctive wine, often superb. The colour is intense and bright. On the nose, the first impression that arises is that of cherry. Then, woody and fine spicy aromas appear, with an elegant hint of musk in some vintages. The flavours are extraordinary in their richness and harmony, neither too rough nor too heavy. The architecture of the wine is held up by fine and noble tannins, giving the body a silky texture (called "gras"). Acidity brings energy and liveliness to the whole. The aftertaste is a pure delight.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Whilst the Pinot Noir grape varietal has its origins in France, and is most closely associated with fine Burgundy wines, it is now grown in almost every wine producing country in the world. There are many reasons for this â€“ the densely packed, deep black bunches of fruits are responsible for making a wide variety of excellent wines, generally agreed to be amongst the most drinkable and accessible one can find. With flavors ranging from currants and red and black berries, to more earthy, spicy notes, Pinot Noir is a versatile varietal which is revered for its relatively light body and beautifully vivid red color However, the grapes themselves are notoriously susceptible to various diseases, and struggle in fluctuating climates. This has not stopped wineries planting and cultivating these vines, though, as Pinot Noir, when grown carefully and treated properly, is a grape with a wide and increasing fan-base, and more often than not produces wonderful wines.

The wines which come out of the Burgundy region of France are regularly hailed as amongst the finest in the world, with the area now being synonymous with quality red wines of exceptional flavor, character and aroma. However, Burgundy is no newcomer to the world of fine wines, with the earliest recordings of the quality of this region's produce dating back to the 6th century, and archaeological evidence suggesting that vineyards had been cultivated there for over two thousand years.
