A beautifully perfumed Petits Vougeots with lifted red flowers, raspberries and sweet spices. A wine of great finesse, refined tannins and a supple, lingering length – the palate texture is closer to a Vosne-Romanée than a Vougeot. A small proportion of whole clusters were added during fermentation; aged in barriques (two-thirds new) for over a year. ... More details

The 2018 Vougeot 1er Cru Les Petits Vougeot has turned out very well, opening in the glass with a lovely bouquet of cassis and plums, complemented by top notes of woodsmoke and violets. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, with a bright spine of acidity and a fragrant, precise finish. A Chambolle-Musigny in all but name, this is an elegant and exquisitely balanced cuvée.

The 2018 Vougeot Les Petits Vougeot 1er Cru has an airy, well-defined bouquet of black currant, briar, crushed rock and light iris petal aromas, compact but nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins and quite succulent in the mouth, delivering licorice-tinged black fruit and a very harmonious, lightly spiced finish that lingers in the mouth. Very promising.

A slightly cooler nose exhibits a fruit profile that derives more from the red side of the spectrum, and in particular cherry and pomegranate, though there are wisps of black raspberry, spice, lavender and rose petal in evidence. The sleek, elegant and refined medium weight flavors flash good minerality before concluding in a balanced, complex and sneaky long finale. This is lovely and the supporting tannins are quite fine-grained.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir grapes have been cultivated in and around the Burgundy region of France for centuries, where they have long been favored by vintners for their wide range of flavors, their thin skins and for producing wines which have light, smooth tannins, and a beautiful garnet red color Whilst they remain one of the flagship varietals of this special region, their wide popularity and recent status as a fashionable 'romantic' varietal has led to them being planted in almost every wine producing country in the world. However, the Pinot Noir demands a huge amount of care and attention from the wineries that wish to grow it, as this varietal is particularly susceptible to various forms of mildew and rot. Despite this, the grape is otherwise a favorite with wineries for the fact that it requires little extra effort once it begins fermentation. Pinot Noir is also widely known for producing some of the world's most famous sparkling wines, being one of two key grapes for the production of Champagne, and several other sparkling varieties.

Region: Burgundy

The beautiful region of Burgundy in France is famously home to some of the most exquisite red wines to be found anywhere on earth, and is most commonly associated with the silky, elegant and flavorful Pinot Noir varietal wines which are commonly produced there. However, the superb and mineral rich soils fed by the Rhone river, and the long hot summers and mild autumns of the region produce a wide variety of fine grapes, and as such, Burgundy produces plenty of different wines which are equally as good as the produce the region is famed for. The region of Burgundy itself has a wine-making history which stretches back at least two thousand years, and as such, it comes as no surprise that the wineries which fill the dozens of controlled appellations of the region rely heavily on traditional methods and techniques when it comes to producing their famous wines.

Country: France

Year in, year out, France enjoys its prestigious reputation as the producer of the finest wines in the world. With a wine making history which spans several thousand years and owes its expertise to the Romans, it comes as little surprise that this most highly esteemed of the Old World wine countries continues to impress and enchant both novices and experts to this day. Despite the rise in quality of wines from neighboring European countries, not to mention the New World, the French wine industry continues to boom, with up to eight billion bottles being produced in recent years. However, France prides itself on always putting quality before quantity, and the wide range in fine produce is a testament to the dedication and knowledge of the wineries across the country. Indeed, from rich and complex reds to light and aromatic white wines, French wines are as varied and interesting as they are enjoyable to drink, making this country a firm favorite for wine lovers across the globe.
