Coolish, pure and bright, with dashes of lemon oil on crushed blue slate rocks, the 2020 Felseneck GG is a Riesling to wake you up with its tart perfume. With lemon leaves and some sur lie notes on the nose, this is always precise, fresh and flinty and a picture-book Riesling for the favored style of Tim Fröhlich. This is as if the ocean was rushing over this vineyard that bears so much salt and power. In this case, its power and concentration shout for a carafe or a decade of bottle aging. For now, I prefer the purity and crystallinity of the Stromberg, but in the long run, this Felseneck could be unrivalled. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2022. ... More details

The very refined, flinty and slatey nose pulls you deep down into this astonishingly elegant riesling GG that's almost bone dry, yet glides gracefully over the palate. Then, life becomes very serious, with a long tunnel through this wild and wonderful, rocky hill country and finally you land in a pit of rock salt at the finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.
Winery
A 7.5 hectare vineyard of blue Devonian slate, basalt and quartz.. No added yeasts. Healthy grapes means less SO2 and this hovers around 43mg.

green grapes

Varietal: Riesling

The pale skinned fruits of the Riesling grapevine have been grown in and around Germany's Rhine Valley for centuries, and contributed much to the country's wine culture. Today, Riesling grapes are grown and processed in several countries around the world, where they are prized for their ability to grow well in colder climates, and their unique flavors and characteristics. Riesling grapes produce an impressive array of wines, including fine semi sweet and dessert wines, to excellent dry white wines and sparkling varieties, all which allow the grape to shine through as a premier example of an excellent white wine varietal. One of the things which makes Riesling such a special grape is the fact that it is highly 'terroir expressive', meaning that the features of the land it is grown on can come across well in the flavors and aromas in the wine. As such, it isn't unusual to find flavors of white stone, or smoky ash-like notes in a fine Riesling alongside the more usual orchard fruit flavors more commonly associated with good white wines.

Country: Germany

Despite being known primarily for sweet and semi-sweet white wines, Germany actually produces a surprisingly large and varied range of wines, with many reaching an extremely high standard and being very well received on the world stage. The terrain across much of the southern parts of the country is extremely fertile, with mineral rich soils adding a wonderful edge to already excellent grapes, and thus resulting in delicious and highly elegant white and rosé wines. The climate in many parts of Germany also allows for some more unusual wine-making practices, with certain regions specializing in the highly aromatic and distinctive 'ice-wines' which are gaining popularity by those looking for something a little more intense and unusual. With these wines, the producers allow the grapes to freeze through the early frosts, resulting in a higher sugar content and a fantastic set of flavors and aromas in the finished product. Germany has long since favored quality over quantity, and a new enthusiasm for fine wine within the country is producing truly exciting results, using a blending of traditional and contemporary techniques.
