Marked by sensationally deep notes of crushed stone, cassis and blueberry, the 2019 Ermitage l'Ermite is a tremendous effort and a worthy rival to the wines produced in the past four vintages. Full-bodied, it's rich and restrained, expansive yet structured—just a complete wine from mouthwatering aromas to velvety mouthfeel and long, stony finish. Incredibly dense elderberry fruit with raw-meat, smoked-bacon, balsamic-vinegar, mushroom and tar aromas. But there are plenty of other nuances in this astonishing Hermitage! Gigantic fine tannins support the wide-screen palate that’s packed to the brim with richness, yet remains so bright and clean. Stunning stony minerality at the almost endless finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2027.

Driving sparky freshness, it seems to explode from the glass. This smells somehow salty, mineral, very intense, so straight and energetic with a thrilling tension. This has an incredible, soaring power with textural finesse and freshness and extraordinary depth. A majestic wine which will be long lived. Yes, the acidity is low, but it's like saying Elvis was overweight. Elvis is still the King. Chapoutier has 1.7ha of Syrah planted in this lieu-dit, compared to 0.5ha of Marsanne. 20% new oak.

Opaque ruby. Displays a complex array of dark fruit preserve, floral, exotic spice and savory herb qualities on the highly perfumed nose; a smoky mineral accent builds as the wine opens up. Shows excellent clarity and spicy lift to its profoundly concentrated cherry liqueur, blueberry, vanilla, espresso and fruitcake flavors, which slowly expand through the mid-palate. Deftly blends depth and energy and shows superb detail and mineral thrust on a strikingly long, youthfully tannic finish.

This delivers power, but in a refined and precise manner, with a stream of cassis, bitter cherry and raspberry coulis dotted with hints of dried flowers, singed alder and sweet savory notes. A long minerally spine ripples underneath, adding tension and cut and pulling everything together into a pinpoint finish. Best from 2026 through 2042. 13 cases imported.

Pure cassis, violets, blackberries, burning embers, and an insane amount of minerality define the 2019 Ermitage L'Ermite, a full-bodied, powerful, backward, primordial Hermitage. As usual, it’s more inward and reserved compared to the Pavillon, yet it’s a huge wine that has masses of tannins, incredible purity, fine tannins, and a great, great finish.

Varietal: Syrah

There are few red wine grape varietals in the world quite as versatile as that of the Shiraz/Syrah vine. These powerful darkly colored grapes are responsible for several wildly popular wines, and are used in the production of still, fortified and sparkling wines, all which carry its magnificent strong flavors very well indeed. This grape varietal is a robust one, easily adaptable to several different climates and terroirs, and yet has a strong ability to express the conditions it is grown in when it ferments and is drank. Most typically, Shiraz/Syrah wines are known for spicy flavors with a big fruity punch, and the fact that they can demonstrate the decisions made by the winemakers in their secondary flavors very clearly.

Region: Rhone Valley

In southern France, one of the primary wine regions responsible for the production of a fine and varied range of wines is the Rhone Valley. Split into two large sub-regions, this expansive valley benefits from micro-climates which allow the wineries to grow a vast array of fine grape varietals. The northern region is the more limited one in regards to the amount of varietals grown, focusing predominantly on raising excellent quality Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier vines for their distinctive and elegant range of wines. The southern region, on the other hand, has a beautifully Mediterranean climate, and is home to dozens of grape varietals which are used to produce white, red and rosÃ© wines, alongside some of the most famous and widely loved blended wines in the world.
