93-95 The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots includes 100% whole cluster with 50% new oak. It has a refined, elegant, mild-mannered bouquet with pure raspberry preserve, cranberry and subtle tobacco scents that unroll with aeration, though never quite delivering the opulence synonymous with the premier cru. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle but insistent grip on the entry. In some ways, the whole bunch addition lends this structure and shifts it toward, say, a Malconsorts in style (not to suggest that is necessarily a bad thing!). Linear and precise, it will require 7 to 10 years in bottle to really show its best. The bottom line is that this is one of the finest Les Suchots that I tasted in 2016. ... More details

A weighty, impressive and appealing Vosne-Romanée with dark fruit notes, density and voluptuousness which is kept in check by impressive acidity. One of the few wines where any oak flavour was noted – but even here it’s pretty subtle. 100% whole bunch.

Smoky, with pretty rose, cherry, sandalwood and spice flavors underneath. Firm and lean, yet remains elegant as this winds down on the lingering finish. Best from 2021 through 2038. 100 cases made, 40 cases imported.

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru, 100% whole bunches, does not quite possess the same delineation as the previous vintage on the nose, the fruit is a little darker, with touches of black cherry and damson, and a hint of undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, juicy black cherry and raspberry fruit, much spicier than I remember with cola and graphite notes towards the finish. Fine, although I prefer the 2015. Tasted at the Domaine de L'Arlot tasting at La Cabotte in London.

An exuberantly spicy nose flashes notes of Asian-style tea, black cherry and sandalwood, all of which is trimmed in noticeable oak influence. Here too there is a lovely texture to the equally succulent, round and sappy flavors that coat the palate and particularly so on the moderately austere and slightly warm finale that displays sneaky good length. This impressive effort is shaped by fine-grained tannins and overall, this is very Vosne in style.
Winery
Finesse, richness, complexity and harmony all come together and unite to show how complete this exceptional wine is. An iron hand in a velvet glove, it describes the fullness of the Pinot Noir with exceptional distinction, expressing a taut nervosity before resonating with richness and elegance. Its aromas evolve harmoniously with age. When young, the wine offers floral notes mingled with raspberry, morello cherries and blackcurrant. With time the aromas evolve and develop towards spices, liquorice, undergrowth and leather.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Whilst the Pinot Noir grape varietal has its origins in France, and is most closely associated with fine Burgundy wines, it is now grown in almost every wine producing country in the world. There are many reasons for this – the densely packed, deep black bunches of fruits are responsible for making a wide variety of excellent wines, generally agreed to be amongst the most drinkable and accessible one can find. With flavors ranging from currants and red and black berries, to more earthy, spicy notes, Pinot Noir is a versatile varietal which is revered for its relatively light body and beautifully vivid red color However, the grapes themselves are notoriously susceptible to various diseases, and struggle in fluctuating climates. This has not stopped wineries planting and cultivating these vines, though, as Pinot Noir, when grown carefully and treated properly, is a grape with a wide and increasing fan-base, and more often than not produces wonderful wines.

Region: Burgundy

In the beautiful French wine region of Burgundy, there is archaeological evidence to suggest that there has been viticultural activity going on for at least two thousand years. To add to this, there are early written records praising the exceptional wines produced in this region dating back to the 6th century, making Burgundy one of the oldest established and still operational wine regions in the world. The region is most commonly associated with fine red wines, with Pinot Noir being the primary grape varietal grown on its rolling hillsides and gently sloping valleys. However, Chardonnay grapes are also produced in abundance for the production of their fine white wines, with both varietals benefiting greatly from the region's warm, hot summers and the superb soils which make up the terroir.

Country: France

Year in, year out, France enjoys its prestigious reputation as the producer of the finest wines in the world. With a wine making history which spans several thousand years and owes its expertise to the Romans, it comes as little surprise that this most highly esteemed of the Old World wine countries continues to impress and enchant both novices and experts to this day. Despite the rise in quality of wines from neighboring European countries, not to mention the New World, the French wine industry continues to boom, with up to eight billion bottles being produced in recent years. However, France prides itself on always putting quality before quantity, and the wide range in fine produce is a testament to the dedication and knowledge of the wineries across the country. Indeed, from rich and complex reds to light and aromatic white wines, French wines are as varied and interesting as they are enjoyable to drink, making this country a firm favorite for wine lovers across the globe.
