This is wine of another order. Hudelot-Noëllat farms 0.28ha of Richebourg in the heart of the appellation, next to DRC. His is a Richebourg of elegance rather than power, with extraordinary purity of bright cherry fruit aromas, with hints of rose petal, exotic spice and a mineral depth on the nose. The texture is dense, not heavy, but silky and very fine. With the 2020 vintage, he has achieved a new level of deliciousness with this wine - the intensity and depth of flavour make this one of my top red wines of the vintage. ... More details

The 2020 Richebourg Grand Cru is much more backward on the nose but give it time and it reveals spellbinding pure dark plum and wild strawberry aromas interlaced with crushed limestone and blood orange. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannins, fine backbone, taut and fresh with just the right amount of salinity on the finish. Difficult to find fault with this Richebourg in all honesty. "I think this might be the best Richebourg I have ever made," commented Charles van Canneyt. Yup.

The king of the cellar is the 2020 Richebourg Grand Cru, a magical wine in the making that wafts from the glass with aromas of cherries, red berries, exotic spices, licorice and orange rind. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's deep and concentrated, with lively acids and a strikingly persistent finish. Again, this looks likely to emerge as the finest of the 2018, 2019 and 2020 trio chez Hudelot-Noëllat.

This is also exuberantly spicy though not necessarily as aromatically complex at present with its slightly more deeply pitched nose. There is equally good mid-palate density and even better power and muscle to the large-scaled yet still refined and more mineral-driven flavors that culminate in a balanced, graceful and even more structured finale. This brilliant effort is class in a class and a wine that should age for two decades with zero worries.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir grapes have been cultivated in and around the Burgundy region of France for centuries, where they have long been favored by vintners for their wide range of flavors, their thin skins and for producing wines which have light, smooth tannins, and a beautiful garnet red color Whilst they remain one of the flagship varietals of this special region, their wide popularity and recent status as a fashionable 'romantic' varietal has led to them being planted in almost every wine producing country in the world. However, the Pinot Noir demands a huge amount of care and attention from the wineries that wish to grow it, as this varietal is particularly susceptible to various forms of mildew and rot. Despite this, the grape is otherwise a favorite with wineries for the fact that it requires little extra effort once it begins fermentation. Pinot Noir is also widely known for producing some of the world's most famous sparkling wines, being one of two key grapes for the production of Champagne, and several other sparkling varieties.

Region: Burgundy

The region of Burgundy has become synonymous with high quality red wines, but in actual fact the region consistently produces a wide variety of fine wines of many different styles, rigorously protected by French wine laws designed to keep reputations and quality at a very high level. The region benefits greatly from a warm and sunny summer climate, which, coupled with the excellent quality soils which typify the region, and centuries of experience and expertise, has led to the region being known all over the world for the excellence of its produce. The majority of grapevines grown here are of the Pinot Noir varietal, which has helped Burgundy become known as the definitive region for elegant and smooth red wines, but Chardonnay grapes and many others are also grown in abundance and used to make both still and sparkling wines.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.
