The base Condrieu from Guigal always delivers and the 2019 Condrieu is stunning stuff, giving up a beautiful bouquet of ripe nectarines, orange blossom, honeysuckle, and exotic flowers. Just classic Condrieu in every way, it's medium to full-bodied, with remarkable purity, a fleshy opulence, and a great, clean finish. Readers looking for a textbook Condrieu can't go wrong with this. It should keep for 7-8 years, although I always prefer these wines in their first 4-5 years of the vintage. ... More details

Notes of candied grapefruit peel, lilac and apricot perfume this bright, sunny Viognier. While fermented and matured in one-third new oak, it balances smoky, spicy, vanilla-cream richness well against pristine tangerine and white-peach flavors, with an invigorating lift of tangerine acidity on the finish. Delicious young, the wine should gain honeyed nuances through 2030. (Editors' Choice)

Sexy and flamboyant, the 2019 Condrieu reflects the warm and sunny vintage throughout. Punchy apricot, melon, pineapple and white peach aromas waft from the glass. The elevated fruit ripeness is apparent, but everything is in perfect harmony. Finishing with a bang, this one is for the hedonists.

green grapes

Varietal: Viognier

The green skinned grapes of the Viognier varietal are a true French classic, and are the only grape varietal allowed to be used in certain fine wines produced in the Rhone region. Their highly aromatic qualities are prized by wineries and wine drinkers alike, and are widely admired for their extremely floral nose which gives an impression of sweetness, despite these wines almost always being very dry. The precise origins of the Viognier grape are lost in time, but today they can still be found growing in many regions of France, as well as in several countries of the New World. Their floral aromas and fruit-forward flavors make them a favorite for those seeking an elegant wine, and despite the grapes being notoriously difficult to grow, vintners persevere with them, as they know the results are rarely less than spectacular.

Region: Rhone Valley

There are few wine regions in the world with a history as long and illustrious as that of the Rhone Valley in France. For over two thousand years, wines have been produced in this region, benefited by the excellent, mineral-rich soils of the region, and the varied climate which allows a wide range of grape varietals to grow. The Rhone Valley is now split into two quite separate regions, with the north part being characterized by its cooler, continental climate and the limited number of grape varietals grown, and the southern sub-region being perfect for growing a wide range of grapes, and producing an exciting number of different wine styles. The Rhone Valley is associated with elegant, flavorful wines, and certain grape varietals such as Viognier and Syrah, which are adept at expressing the finer features of their terroir.

Country: France

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year. Not only are the finest red wines in the world said to come from the beautiful regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but elsewhere in the country we find the Champagne region, and areas such as the Rhone Valley and the Loire, whose white wines consistently receive awards and accolades by the plenty. This range is a result of the great variety of climatic conditions and terrain found in France, coupled with generations of wine makers working within single appellations. Their knowledge of specific terroirs and grape varieties has, over time, perfected the production of wines within their region, and the end results continue to impress the world to this day.
