Lastly, and a perfect wine, the 2019 Gigondas Le Poste comes from a tiny vineyard located just across the street from the domaine, and as with all these single vineyard releases, it’s 100% Grenache, not destemmed, and aged in mostly used Burgundy barrels. Louis compares the vintage to 1998, and I can’t disagree with him, as the wines are powerful yet structured. Incredible notes of cassis, currants, scorched earth, and wildflowers all show on the nose, and it’s full-bodied and perfectly balanced, with ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and an incredible finish. It’s as good as anything out there. Hats off to the genius of Louis Barruol, and readers should snag as much of this as they can. It will ideally be given 4-5 years of bottle age and will evolve for two decades. ... More details

A stunner from the start, with a piercingly pure and beautiful display of violet and cherry purée aromas and flavors taking center stage, supported by ultra-refined chalky minerality and fine beaded acidity. Lacy rooibos tea, garrigue and lavender accents drape the finish, adding a beguiling note at the very end. Beautiful wine. Best from 2025 through 2040. 125 cases made, 24 cases imported.

Extraordinary tannic structure for a 100% Grenache, with intensity of fruit, salinity and great driving freshness throughout. Extraordinary depth and floral on the finish, violets. Grenache planted on limestone marl. Single vineyard. No destemming. 12 months maturation in French oak barriques: 20% new, 50% one-year-old, 30% two-year-old. Unfiltered.

Shimmering ruby-red. Highly perfumed and finely detailed aromas of raspberry and cherry preserves, candied flowers, exotic spices and incense are complemented by a smoky mineral flourish. Alluringly sweet and incisive on the palate, offering vibrant, densely packed red fruit preserve, cherry-cola, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that deepen steadily as the wine opens up. Shows superb clarity and mineral thrust on a strikingly long, focused finish that features polished tannins and lingering red berry and floral notes.

This release is an solar powerhouse compared to its typically sleeker, graceful expressions of Gigondas. Richly concentrated in flavors of black fig and blueberry preserves, it maintains vitality, marked by streaks of crushed stone and salt. A velveteen sip framed by soft, supple tannins, it has a nose-tickling, white-pepper finish. Cellar through late 2023 at least. The wine should improve through 2035.

Region: Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.
