Leading off the Côte Rôties, the 2019 Côte Rôtie Chateau D'Ampuis is always a brilliant wine, and in recent years, it's come close to rivaling the single vineyard releases. Don't believe me? Put it in a blind lineup and let me know the results. The 2019 is absolutely brilliant, and I'd put this up with the finest vintages of this cuvée to date, including the 2009, 2010, 2017, and 2018. Awesome aromatics of ripe red and black fruits, tapenade, iron, and gamey, meaty, floral notes all emerge on the nose, and this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a seamless, layered mouthfeel, beautiful yet substantial tannins, and a great finish. Hide bottles for 4-6 years if you can and enjoy over the following 15-20 years. As always, the Chateau D'Ampuis comes from a mix of seven lieux-dits spread across the appellation and sees the same four years in new barrels as the single vineyards. ... More details

94-96 The 2019 Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis is a super example of this cuvée, which blends fruit from seven different lieux-dits (three on the Cote Blonde and four on the Cote Brune). Smoky, herbal and complex, with a solid foundation of blueberry and raspberry fruit, it's full-bodied and concentrated yet silky, elegant and long on the finish.

This combines the elegance and finesse for which the appellation is famous with tremendous power. In spite of this the tannins are very fine, the generous oak already beautifully woven into the plush tapestry of flavors. Stunning length and complexity at the finish. From seven plots that are neighbours to La Mouline and La Landonne on the Cote-Rotie. A cuvee of 93% syrah and 7% viognier. Matured in 100% new oak barrels for 38 months. Drink or hold.

The alluring 2019 Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis fires on all cylinders. Bold and fleshy, it exhales prominent black cherry compote, crushed violets, pencil shaving, cedar and licorice. Earthy and meaty undertones add more aromatic layers. The full-bodied 2019 hits all the right spots, flawlessly combining elevated ripeness and intensity with balancing freshness. Grippy yet ripe tannins require at least four more years in bottle. After that, the 2019 will delight at least until 2040.

Fresh and stewed plum flavors have a caressing feel, with bitter chocolate and singed lard chiming in. Orange peel acidity nicely props up the round, weighty palate, while bitter cherry, roasted apple wood and mesquite smoke stretch out on the firm, iron-edged finish. This should have a long life ahead in the cellar. Drink now through 2032. 2,000 cases made, 240 cases imported. (Collectible)

This has a powerful mineral drive and dense, powerful tannins. The polished oak is prominent throughout, from the nose through to the palate and the finish. Dark and brooding, the structure is massive and imposing. This certainly has great intensity and depth, but the oak work dominates for now, so give it time to integrate. From seven parcels across the Côte Brune and Côte Blonde, aged for 38 months in new barriques.

Varietal: Syrah

There are few red wine grape varietals in the world quite as versatile as that of the Shiraz/Syrah vine. These powerful darkly colored grapes are responsible for several wildly popular wines, and are used in the production of still, fortified and sparkling wines, all which carry its magnificent strong flavors very well indeed. This grape varietal is a robust one, easily adaptable to several different climates and terroirs, and yet has a strong ability to express the conditions it is grown in when it ferments and is drank. Most typically, Shiraz/Syrah wines are known for spicy flavors with a big fruity punch, and the fact that they can demonstrate the decisions made by the winemakers in their secondary flavors very clearly.

Region: Rhone Valley

For over two thousand years, the southern French region of the Rhone Valley has been home to wine-makers and wineries of many different types. The ancient Greeks were the first to discover that a wide range of grape varietals can flourish in the rich soils and micro-climates which typify the region, and little has changed to this day. In the modern age, the Rhone Valley is recognized around the world as the home of excellent quality white, red and rosé wines, as well as some of the most highly respected blended wines on earth. The region is split into two distinctive sub-regions, with the cooler, continental northern sub-region producing primarily Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines of exquisite quality, and the hotter southern sub-region growing a much wider variety of grapes.

Country: France

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year. Not only are the finest red wines in the world said to come from the beautiful regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but elsewhere in the country we find the Champagne region, and areas such as the Rhone Valley and the Loire, whose white wines consistently receive awards and accolades by the plenty. This range is a result of the great variety of climatic conditions and terrain found in France, coupled with generations of wine makers working within single appellations. Their knowledge of specific terroirs and grape varieties has, over time, perfected the production of wines within their region, and the end results continue to impress the world to this day.
