The 2016 Riesling Alte Reben La Borne is from a special (upper) parcel in the Morstein that always gives a special, extremely chalky character. On the nose there is a very pure, elegant, concentrated and herbal bouquet of perfectly ripe and chalky Riesling aromas. On the palate this is a full-bodied, rich and creamy but fine and highly elegant Riesling with ripe, lush fruit, fine tannins and lingering salinity. Its is gorgeous Riesling with great intensity, finesse and more flesh compared to the Morstein GG.

Thyme, iris, Meyer lemon and pit-inflected white peach rise intensely from the glass, then persist inner-mouth as bittersweet perfume and animating juiciness. The feel is silken, almost soothing, while the wine's palpable sense of extract-richness pushes it in an almost custardy, anything-but-adamant direction. A mussel-like combination of savory meatiness, mouthwatering salinity and algae-like herbacity makes for a finish of utmost intrigue as well as seductively floral and fruity appeal, its peach kernel piquancy glowingly sustained without turning outright bitter. Morstein this may officially be by Einzellage, but Wittmann's Brunnenhäuschen always strikes me as wine in a very different key, not to mention more sensually alluring, even if this year it seems as though Wittmann's Morstein bottling (as my tasting note on that wine reveals) has taken a lesson in charm from Brunnenhäuschen.

Varietal: Riesling

Riesling grapes have produced some of the finest wines of the Old World over the past couple of centuries, and are quickly becoming much loved by New World audiences as their influence continues to spread across the globe. They are generally grown and cultivated in colder climates, as is found in their native Germany, where they have the remarkable ability to pick up and express interesting features of their terroir, or the ground on which they are grown. As such, wine enthusiasts generally find Riesling one of the more interesting white grape varietals, as they produce aromas which are highly floral and perfumed alongside both fruit flavors and refreshing notes of stone and alpine water, depending on where they have been grown. Furthermore, Riesling grapes produce a large variety of fine wines, from still to sparkling, sweet to dry, and wineries which work with this grape have long since been experimenting with both frozen and rotten grapes to find out just how versatile and exciting this varietal can be.

Region: Rheingau / Rheinhessen

Rheingau in Germany is one of the country's most prodigious and well respected wine regions, with the south facing slopes of the mountains in the area producing Riesling grape vines of exceedingly high quality. The region has a wine making history which stretches back for centuries, and the wineries of Rheingau have long since mastered the art of expressing the beautiful, windswept and mineral rich terroir through their characterful white wines. With only three thousand hectares of Rheingau being under vine, the region is relatively small, yet has been home to many of the country's finest wines, and a large proportion of the most important viticultural innovations of Germany. Whilst Riesling is by far the most popular grape varietal in Rheingau, Pinot Noir is also grown quite widely, and today, many wineries are continuing to experiment with new grape varietals in order to make a wider range of wines.

Country: Germany

If German wine has had something of a bad reputation in the past, it may well be the fault of the fact that for a long time now, the Germans have simply kept all the best produce to themselves. Visit any town or village in wine producing regions of Germany, and you'll be faced with a stunning array of extremely high quality wines, each matched with local dishes and full of distinct character and flavor. As white wine production makes up for about two-thirds of all Germany's wine industry, this is by far the most visible and widely enjoyed type of wine, but one should not overlook the quality and range of rosé and red wines on offer from this fascinating country. In particular, the Spatburgunder wines (the German name for Pinot Noir) are generally of an exceptionally high quality, being full of dark, intense hedgerow fruit flavors and exciting spicy notes with a silky smooth finish.
