Fresh, forward citrus aromas with a buttery edge alongside vanilla and green fruit. Sharp, thrilling, expressive palate, with a kick of citrus fruit alongside tangy acidity before a soft minerality comes into play. Oak is balanced by the lemon and lime. Well constructed with so much power and character. From vines with an average age of 45 years on shallow clay and limestone soils. A blend of 67% Sauvignon Blanc and 33% Semillon, the wine is aged in 100% new French oak barrels for nine months. ... More details

Lively, with lemon gelée, white peach and honeysuckle notes backed by a zip of savory and a flash of fleur de sel. Utterly delicious. Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Drink now through 2025. 333 cases made.

89-91 Sporting a pale lemon color, the 2020 Opalie de Coutet gives up invigorating wafts of grapefruit oil, mandarin peel and nectarines, with hints of struck match and wet pebbles. The dry, refreshing, medium-bodied palate is packed with citrus and minerally flavors, supported by a racy backbone and finishing zesty. I like this "sec" expression a lot!

The 2020 Opalie, the dry cuvée from Coutet, has a perfumed nose of white flowers, honeysuckle and Conference pear, a light earthy note emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine acidity that neatly counters the concentrated citrus fruit, and a tang of stem ginger and dried orange peel toward the finish. This is an excellent Opalie that should drink well for several years.

Varietal: White Bordeaux

Of all the blended white wines in the world, it is those which come out of the Bordeaux region of France which have an unrivaled reputation for excellence of character and sublime, complex flavors This is mainly due to the expertise of the established wineries of the region, who have for centuries been carefully and skilfully blended selected grape varietals in order to balance their wines and bring out each grape's best features. There are nine grape varietals allowed by French law for the inclusion in Bordeaux white blended wines, and these are Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Muscadelle, Sauvignon Gris, Merlot Blanc, Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Ondenc and Mauzac. However, the vast majority of white wines from this region are made primarily from Sauvignon Blanc grapes, with a little Sémillon or Muscadelle blended into their fermenting juices.

Region: Bordeaux

The Bordeaux region of France is possibly the most famous and widely respected wine region in the world. Known primarily for its exceptional blended red wines, made most commonly with Cabernet Sauvigon, Merlot and Petit Verdot grape varietals, it also produces superb dry white wines (both blended and single variety), alongside the highly esteemed sweet wines of Sauternes. All of these wine types use a careful mix of traditional wine-making methods alongside modern techniques, as well as more experimental and unorthodox practices such as turning their grapes over to the noble rot which intensifies the flavors in the sweet wines. Bordeaux benefits greatly from its position amongst wide river basins, and the cooling Atlantic breezes which blow across the rolling vineyards which cover this region.

Country: France

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year. Not only are the finest red wines in the world said to come from the beautiful regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but elsewhere in the country we find the Champagne region, and areas such as the Rhone Valley and the Loire, whose white wines consistently receive awards and accolades by the plenty. This range is a result of the great variety of climatic conditions and terrain found in France, coupled with generations of wine makers working within single appellations. Their knowledge of specific terroirs and grape varieties has, over time, perfected the production of wines within their region, and the end results continue to impress the world to this day.
